Dress Line "Chester Coat"

I would like to introduce the Chester Coat from The Dressing Lab's Order Coat menu.

Chester Coat

Chester Coat 1
The Chesterfield Coat is said to take its name from the Earl of Chesterfield in the 19th century, and it has long been loved as one of the most elegant coat styles in men's tailoring.

Today, the Chesterfield Coat is regarded as one of the more formal coat styles. At the time, when long and heavy coats were common for warmth, the shorter length and shaped waist of the Chesterfield style were considered very modern. It placed importance not only on warmth, but also on elegance and ease of wear. Although the formal name is "Chesterfield Coat," in Japan it is often shortened to "Chester Coat," and we use that name in our menu as well.

Originally developed in men's fashion, the Chester Coat has now become a familiar style for both men and women. Its appeal lies in the balance between elegance and versatility, as it can be worn in both formal and more relaxed settings.

Let me introduce the design variations and features of The Dressing Lab's made-to-order Chester Coats.

Dimensional Tailored Form

立体的なテーラードのフォルム
One of the defining features of the Chester Coat is its tailored design, which can be seen almost as a jacket extended into a coat. Like a jacket, it is constructed with canvas interlining to create structure and shape. Other coats we offer, such as the Staincollar Coat and the Raglan Coat, also have collars, but the Chester Coat is the one that features a lapel most similar to a tailored jacket. This rolled, full lapel is one of the beautiful characteristics of the Chester Coat. Inspired by the classic Chesterfield style, its essence lies in a chest with natural volume, a shaped waist, and a smooth, elegant silhouette.

The Dressing Lab's Signature Natural Shoulder

The Dressing Lab's Signature Natural Shoulder
Just as with our made-to-order jackets, the Chester Coat can be made with various shoulder constructions, from structured shoulders with shoulder pads to natural shoulders without pads. The Dressing Lab's Chester Coat follows the concept of our jackets and is made with a natural shoulder without shoulder pads. This gives the coat a lighter feel, a comfortable fit, and a softer appearance, making it easy to wear not only with dressy outfits, but also in more casual styles.

Collar Rise and Exceptional Fit

Collar Rise and Exceptional Fit
One of the features I especially value in The Dressing Lab's Chester Coat is the way the collar rises and sits around the neck. Ideally, the collar of the coat should not fall away and reveal too much of the jacket collar underneath. Our Chester Coat is shaped by skilled craftsmen so that the collar rises smoothly from the natural shoulder line and sits closely around the neck and shoulders. This helps the coat and jacket look as if they belong together naturally.

Chesterfield Coat
This collar design is not only beautiful, but also practical. Because it covers the neck properly, it helps provide warmth. More importantly, when the coat sits well around the neck and shoulders, the weight is distributed more naturally. This makes the coat feel lighter on the body, so you can wear it comfortably without feeling burdened by its weight.

Single and Double: Design Variations of the Chester Coat

Next, let me introduce the design variations. Broadly speaking, the Chester Coat is available in two main styles: single-breasted and double-breasted. These are commonly called the Single Chester and Double Chester.

Single Chester

The Single Chester is typically available with two lapel styles: the notched lapel and the peaked lapel. In general, a narrower lapel gives a more modern impression, while a wider lapel creates a more classic look. At The Dressing Lab, I often recommend a wide lapel for a confident and classic appearance. Of course, the width can be adjusted slightly narrower or wider according to your preference.

Double Chester

Double Chester
The Double Chester features a double-breasted front, with a peaked lapel as the standard collar design. This is similar to a double-breasted jacket. Compared with the Single Chester, the Double Chester has a broader collar and a more substantial appearance. However, our Double Chester is made with softly curved lapels and a natural shoulder line without pads, so it has a softer impression and does not feel overly heavy.

the Double Cheste
Although it has some similarities to a double-breasted Polo Coat, the Double Chester is simpler in its details. The Polo Coat is a wonderful coat with distinctive features such as back pleats, turn-up cuffs, and framed patch pockets, but these details create a stronger character. If you are looking for a simpler double-breasted coat, I recommend the Double Chester.

Distinctive Cuffs of the Chester Coat

Distinctive Cuffs of the Chester Coat
The cuffs of the Chester Coat are also distinctive. While the Staincollar Coat and Raglan Coat often have sportier cuff designs, such as tabs or simple barrel cuffs to help protect against wind and rain, the Chester Coat traditionally has four buttons, just like a tailored jacket. At The Dressing Lab, functioning sleeve vents, also known as surgeon's cuffs, come as standard. For the button placement, you can choose either stacked buttons, also called kissing buttons, or parallel placement.

Flap or Patch? Options for the Waist Pocket

Patch Pockets

The standard waist pocket design for a Chester Coat is the familiar welt pocket with flaps, similar to those found on suits. However, we can also make the coat with slanted patch pockets. These pockets are easy to use and give the coat a sportier, more relaxed impression.

Spolverino

Spolverino
A casual coat style that originated in Italy, made with slanted patch pockets and a shorter, lighter length, is called a "Spolverino," which means something like a dust coat. It is a perfect piece to wear casually in place of a jacket.

Change Pocket Feature

Change Pocket Feature
You can also add a small pocket above the regular waist pocket. This is known as a change pocket. Here, "change" refers to coins. It is said that in Western tip culture, this pocket was useful for taking out coins neatly when giving tips. Although it may not be used often in Japan today, the change pocket is a classic and gentlemanly detail.

Back-Belted or Beltless Design

You can choose whether or not to add a back belt to the coat. Deciding between the expressive back-belted design and the clean beltless look is one of the enjoyable parts of made-to-order tailoring.

Back-Belted Design

Back-Belted Design2
The back-belted design adds a visual accent and also has the effect of making the waist position appear slightly higher. When adding a back belt, we intentionally make it shorter than the actual body width. This creates drape around the waist and gives the back style more expression.

Beltless Design

The simple beltless design also has its own charm. Both the back-belted and beltless designs are attractive in different ways. We can suggest the most suitable option while considering your preference and the fabric you choose.

Unique Fabric Choices and Tailoring Combinations Exclusive to Made-to-Order

The Chesterfield Coat has long been regarded as a timeless formal coat. When paired with a dark suit, a Chesterfield Coat made in navy or charcoal grey cashmere or wool creates a beautifully elegant impression.

On the other hand, making it in earthy colors such as camel or brown gives the coat warmth and a lively character, which can be equally attractive. I also recommend trying not only traditional coat fabrics, but also jacket or suit fabrics, to create a lighter and more relaxed Spolverino-like feel. The appeal of the Chesterfield Coat lies in its versatility and in how its character can change depending on the fabric and tailoring details.

The Dressing Lab's made-to-order Chesterfield Coats are crafted with respect for traditional tailoring techniques, while also incorporating the light and soft character inspired by Italian style. Their versatility is one of their great charms. Beyond business and formal settings, they can also be worn casually over knitwear or shirts, almost like a jacket substitute.

If you are looking for an even lighter finish, I recommend options such as an unlined construction, a wide lapel design, or using a softer and lighter jacket fabric to create a Spolverino-like feel. You can also choose the lining, buttons, and personalized embroidery. The pleasure of creating a coat that reflects your own preferences is one of the true joys of made-to-order clothing.

Born in the 19th century and loved for many years, the Chesterfield Coat remains an essential piece for autumn and winter style. It can be worn with suits, but it can also adapt beautifully to more casual outfits. If you are considering a coat that you can enjoy for many years, I would be happy for you to consider a made-to-order Chester Coat, tailored to your preferred fabric, details, and way of wearing. Please feel free to consult with The Dressing Lab.
