Châteaubriand Calf: The Ultimate Full Brogue

K’s second bespoke order was a pair of black calf full brogues. Understated yet striking, with beautifully sculpted depth and shadow — we invite you to take a closer look at this exceptional pair.

Background of the Order

This is K's second pair of bespoke shoes, following a brown patina punched cap-toe. The first pair, made with leather soles, was heavily used for work, worn enough to require toe steel and half rubber protection before placing the second order.

For the second order, K kindly wrote down several design candidates on paper. Among them, a "black calf full brogue" was initially a lower priority because it is a relatively common design and material among ready-made shoes. However, following Mr. Shirahama's advice -- "It's best to first build a foundation with classic shoes. They look exceptionally good." -- K decided to proceed with the order.

The leather selected was Dupuy's "Châteaubriand." This fine-grained, supple calf is highly recommended by Mr. Shirahama, who even made a pair for himself using the same leather. I also ordered loafers in this leather, and beyond its softness and immediate comfort, its natural sheen is remarkable. It enhances not only dress shoes but even casual designs such as loafers or U-tips with a refined elegance.

A full brogue features a wingtip with a medallion and decorative perforations across each panel. Originally adopted for outdoor footwear, it is not considered formal attire. However, in black calf with closed lacing, it perfectly complements K's year-round dark-suit wardrobe.

Since K already had an established last, the process began directly with leather fittings rather than the usual transparent resin fitting used at the first stage. Two leather fittings were conducted to refine the fit and confirm the details.

First Fitting

Only the right shoe features perforation and pinking similar to the finished product. Leather fittings allow confirmation not only of the fit but also of design details such as hole size.

The fit is adjusted while carefully feeling the shoe by hand and listening to the client's feedback.

Considering the softness of Châteaubriand leather, adjustments were refined before proceeding to the second fitting.

Second Fitting

The first fitting was already sufficient to proceed to production, but a careful second leather fitting was conducted.

As expected, the second fitting achieved a level of comfort that felt wearable already. After thorough confirmation, the shoes moved to final production.

Completion

An exceptional pair of full brogues has been completed. The leather's natural luster is outstanding, so polishing was applied subtly only to the toe and heel.

The depth and shadow unique to black full brogues. A sculptural form only bespoke can achieve.

Fine perforations and extremely delicate pinking rarely seen in ready-made shoes -- elegance pursued to the utmost detail.

At the side where wingtip, vamp, and heel lines meet, the curves differ subtly to create movement -- a reflection of Mr. Shirahama's aesthetic sense.

The wingtip center is set slightly inward to achieve a balanced and clean appearance.

The higher heel enhances posture -- a hallmark of bespoke. Delicate pinking is also applied to the topline. A truly labor-intensive shoe.

The flowing curves formed by perforations and the sculpted instep volume are captivating.

Perforations, pinking, and stitching -- the perforations alternate between one large and two small holes, known as "parent-child" holes. The craftsmanship inspires reverence.

The eyelets, tongue perforation, pinking, and reinforcement stitches are all carefully executed.

The clean rise from sole to upper -- characteristic of hand-sewn welted construction.

Wearing

Upon wearing them, K remarked, "They feel soft the moment I put them on."

"Full brogues can be polarizing -- it was a gamble, but the result exceeded both my expectations and concerns."

20240710_full_brogue_43.jpg

"They looked bold when viewed alone, but worn in black they feel reassuring and versatile. They also seem easy to walk in."

The contrast between the polished toe and the subtly shining vamp is beautiful.

K was extremely satisfied and even placed an order for a third pair that same day.

Black calf full brogues -- the most standard color and familiar design for dress shoes. Precisely because of this, the bespoke quality stands out.

When I first began working with Mr. Shirahama, I was eager to order unique designs not found in ready-made shoes. However, now that I understand the excellence of bespoke footwear, I believe classic designs may be the most worthwhile to commission bespoke.

The comfort unique to bespoke, the posture-enhancing fit, and the meticulous aesthetic in every detail -- yet never eccentric, always understated and seamlessly fitting into daily business attire. Only possible through Mr. Shirahama's deep understanding of classic style.

Compared to ready-made shoes, bespoke requires more time and investment, so some may feel it is a high hurdle. However, I encourage you to try just one pair. Like K and myself, once experienced, your perception will change and you will realize bespoke shoes are far from expensive.
